Russian leaders on Nelson Mandela and his great legacy

«Nelson Mandela represents a whole era in Africa’s modern history. An era that is marked by the victory over the Apartheid regime and the establishment of the democratic South-African Republic. Having gone through ordeals he remained faithful to his radiant ideals of humanism and justice to the very end».
Vladimir Putin, President of the Russian Federation

«Nelson Mandela has rightfully become the embodiment and the keystone figure of national reconciliation in South Africa. Paying respectful tribute to him, Africa’s great son who was awarded the Russian Order of Friendship we will forever be grateful for his vital contribution to advancing our bilateral relations which have by now reached the high level of strategic partnership»
Dmitry Medvedev, Prime-minister of the Russian Federation

«Nelson Mandela was a great man, a prominent statesman of a global scale, a true son of Africa. His whole life was devoted to a struggle for freedom, a freedom for his country and every single South African. His strong will and fortitude, his high-standing morals and power of conviction — those were his main weapons in this struggle.
We will forever preserve the memory of Nelson Mandela. We will follow his shining example, supporting moral principles in international affairs, principles, which many politicians lack so much in today’s world»
Sergey Lavrov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation

«Nelson Mandela’s life and struggle will forever remain a striking example for many generations of politics and common folk all over the globe, for all those who share and hold dear his ideals of freedom, equality and justice.
It is mostly thanks to Nelson Mandela and his steadfast authority that the process of establishing a new post-Apartheid South African statehood went down peacefully without shedding any blood. It is also his expertise that allowed South Africa to promptly, in a historic perspective, take the route of true democratic transformation. He has left his mark on the world’s history as a wise, purposeful politician, an extraordinary humanist, an advocate for human rights».
Valentina Matvienko, President of the Council of the Federation of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation (the Upper Chamber of the Russian Parliament)
