Comment by the Information and Press Department on the humanitarian situation in Yemen

It is our strongly held view that so long as the bloody internal political conflict in Yemen involving the Saudi-led ‘coalition’ continues, the humanitarian problems facing peaceful Yemenis will continue to worsen. The people of Yemen are literally struggling to survive against a sea and air blockade, mass famine and epidemics.

In this regard, we took note of the so-called ‘march for bread’ on April 19, in which many thousands of people set off from Sana’s for the port of Al Hudaydah, currently the only open ‘window’ to Yemen. Upon arriving in the evening of April 24, the participants of this humanitarian, non-political rally declared Al Hudaydah ‘a humanitarian zone.’ This circumstance has special significance in the context of the information we are receiving about the plans of the forces loyal to President of Yemen Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi to seize the city.

We see the ‘march for bread’ as a sign of the desperation of Yemeni citizens, an attempt not only to save Al Hudaydah from destruction, but also to draw the attention of the wider international community to the catastrophic socioeconomic situation in the country.

For our part, we reiterate our deep concern over the plight of the people of Yemen. We call upon the international community to render urgent humanitarian assistance to Yemen, and to take urgent steps to end the armed confrontation and resume an intra-Yemen negotiation process that reflects the interests of all political forces in Yemen.
