Comment by the Information and Press Department on developments in Ukraine

mfa russia 1

Recently tensions have been escalating along the line of contact of the conflicting sides in southeastern Ukraine. Media are reporting more frequent shelling of settlements and casualties among Donbass civilians.

Regrettably, Kiev has sharply stepped up its militant rhetoric. During the last meeting of the Contact Group (On August 3-4 of this year) it refused to sign the practically ready document on the withdrawal of tanks, artillery up to 100 mm and mortars up to 120 mm in calibre from the line of contact to a depth of 15 km on each side, which was intended to defuse tensions in the region. Peremptorily making references to some threats and provocations, the Ukrainian authorities began to announce the return of their heavy weapons and artillery systems to their combat positions from which they were withdrawn in accordance with the Package of Measures for the Implementation of the Minsk Agreements of February 12, 2015.

We are calling on the Ukrainian side to display restraint and not to violate the implementation of the Minsk Agreements on security by their irresponsible actions.
