The US Department of State has made a clearly hypocritical statement about being “deeply troubled” over the fate of Russian civic society in connection with Russia’s formal designation of the US National Endowment for Democracy (NED) as an undesirable organisation. Washington, of all places, should know what is behind the deceptive title of this endowment, which is listed as an NGO only on paper. In reality it has existed since its creation on payments from the US budget, including funds allocated by intelligence agencies. Characteristically, its Director, Carl Gershman, has openly admitted that it was initially designed as a beautiful façade for distributing money among opposition quarters of foreign countries.
NED’s deeds speak for themselves. The analysis of its specific projects shows that most of them are aimed at destabilising, by different means, the domestic situation in those countries that are trying to pursue an independent policy rather than following Washington’s lead.
Russia appreciates and supports the activities of organisations that are conducting constructive and in-demand work, including efforts to develop democracy. However, we will never tolerate mentorship and open interference of foreign agencies into our domestic affairs.
