Comment by the Information and Press Department of the Russian MFA on the terrorist act in Tunisia

The media reports that, on June 26, armed terrorists opened fire at tourists on the beach of the Riu Imperial Marhaba and Soviva hotels at the Port El Kantaoui tourist resort near the city of Sousse. An estimated 27 people were killed and 20 more wounded, including one Russian citizen.

So far, there have been no official reports about the national affiliation of the deceased. Russian diplomats stationed in Tunisia are working with Tunisia’s Foreign Ministry and security agencies to ascertain whether there are any other Russian citizens among the victims.

Moscow resolutely condemns this terrorist outrage against Tunisian civilians and foreign citizens aimed at undermining stability and security in friendly Tunisia. We see this as a heinous crime which cannot be justified in any way. The organisers and perpetrators must receive justice. We are offering our sincere condolences to the families and friends of the deceased.

We are calling on the Tunisian authorities to take the necessary action in order to prevent similar tragedies in the future and to do everything possible to guarantee the safe stay of foreign citizens in the country.

Comment by the Information and Press Department of the Russian MFA on the Ethiopian general election

On May 24, Ethiopia held a general election. On June 22, the National Election Board published the official election returns showing that the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) has won a landslide victory. It received 546 out of 547 seats at the House of Peoples' Representatives, the lower chamber of parliament. The EPRDF and its supporters also received an overwhelming majority of seats at regional legislative assemblies.

African Union observers have noted the peaceful and well-organised nature of the election campaign and the election itself, as well as the absence of major violations that might have influenced the voting process.

Moscow welcomes an Ethiopian general election that highlights the popular support for the government’s efforts to ensure stable national political and socioeconomic development.

Comment by the MFA Information and Press Department on Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov's visit to Ethiopia

On 17 September Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will pay a working visit to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. He will hold talks with Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn and his Ethiopian counterpart Tedros Adhanom in Addis Ababa.

The sides will pay special attention to discussing the development of mutually beneficial and multifaceted relations between Russia and Ethiopia, our long-time partner in Africa. Among the issues to be discussed is also trade, economic and investment cooperation, in particular, the implementation of major joint projects on energy, hydrocarbon production, agriculture and transport infrastructure in Ethiopia, and assistance in the training of Ethiopian personnel. The sides will also review further steps on improving the bilateral contractual and legal foundation.

They will also focus on key international issues, the situation in different African regions and the prevention and resolution of crises.

In Addis Ababa, Mr Lavrov will also meet with Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma. They will discuss ways of promoting cooperation between Russia and the Union, in particular, on urgent international and regional issues. The sides will exchange views on the situation in Africa’s hot spots, primarily Mali, the Saharan-Sahel region, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the African Great Lakes, and Somalia.

The sides will sign a memorandum of mutual understanding on the mechanism of political consultations between the Russian Foreign Ministry and the African Union Commission. They will also concentrate on discussing prospects of Russian-African trade and economic cooperation, with an emphasis on creating favourable conditions for investment activities of Russian companies.

The statement for press by Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia Sergey Lavrov after the talks with the Prime-Minister of Ethiopia Hailemariam Desalegn, Addis-Ababa, 17 September 2014

We had a very important meeting with the Prime Minister of Ethiopia Hailemariam Desalegn. And together with my colleague and friend, the Foreign Minister of  Ethiopia Tedros Adhanom, we presented the ideas for further developing our bilateral relationship and our cooperation on international issues.

On the bilateral front the Intergovernmental Commission on Economic, Trade and Scientific Cooperation is working well. They met last July, and agreed on quite a number of important directions where they will be following up together with quite a number of Russian and Ethiopian economic partners, including sectors of energy, mineral recourses and others. We also agreed that the draft agreements should be expedited on investment protection and some other things, including on issues related to military technical cooperation, which is a very important element of Russian-Ethiopian partnership.

We also reiterated our intend to act together on international issues on resolving conflicts by peaceful means, avoiding unilateral actions, especially the unilateral use of force. We strongly support the African Union leadership on the efforts to resolve conflicts in Africa. We appreciate a very big and active role of Ethiopia in promoting peacekeeping and peacemaking efforts in the Horn of Africa and in other parts of the continent..
