Comment by the Information and Press Department on the presidential election in Tanzania

The presidential election held in the United Republic of Tanzania on October 25 saw a 67 per cent voter turnout.

According to official data published on October 29, John Magufuli from the ruling Party of the Revolution was declared the winner after the first round, in which he won 58.46 per cent of the vote.

International observers, including from the African Union and the Southern African Development Community (SADC), noted the free and open nature of the election.

Moscow welcomes Tanzania’s presidential election as a major milestone in the democratic development of its society.

Foreign Ministry comment following the signing of a peace deal on South Sudan

Moscow has taken a positive view of reports from Juba, the capital of South Sudan, stating that the republic’s president, Salva Kiir, signed an agreement on August 26 on the resolution of the conflict in the Republic of South Sudan. Earlier, on August 17, at a regular round of negotiations between the South Sudanese sides in Addis Ababa, the document was signed by Riek Machar, the leader of the opposition movement and former vice president of the Republic of South Sudan. We hope that these agreements – which provide, in particular, for an immediate ceasefire, the formation of a national unity government, the withdrawal of foreign troops from South Sudan, the disarmament of illegal armed formations and the holding of general elections after a transition period – will be honoured.

We welcome the active efforts of the group of international mediators under the auspices of the East African Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and its expanded format known as IGAD Plus, which has made it possible to harmonise the text of the agreement and ensure its signing by the parties to the conflict.

We hope that the agreements will become an important practical step toward lasting peace and national accord in South Sudan.

Comment by the Information and Press Department on the attack against a Russian airline office in Mali

utairOn August 5, the UTair airline office in Bamako came under an armed attack with the use of firearms and hand grenades. It was only by chance that no Russian or local citizens were hurt.

Moscow strongly condemns this gangster-like act, which was designed to intimidate foreign civilians who live and work in Mali.

We urge the Mali authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into this incident, hold the guilty accountable and take additional measures to ensure an appropriate level of security for foreign agencies and foreign nationals in the country

Press Release on a political agreement initialled by representatives of Libyan parties

On July 12, representatives of Libyan parties meeting in Skhirat (Morocco) initialled an agreement drafted during an intra-Libyan dialogue under the auspices of the United Nations. The General National Congress in Tripoli abstained from signing the document. Its delegation did not attend the meeting.

The agreement sets the terms, which were approved by all parties, for ending the internal Libyan conflict, and stipulates the creation of a national unity government and other central governing bodies, as well as measures to deescalate violence and ensure security and law enforcement.

Moscow has welcomed the signing as a crucial step towards advancing the political process in Libya.

We are convinced that a national consensus about the future of a sovereign and territorially undivided Libya is in the interests of all its citizens without exception. We hope that the full implementation the Skhirat accord will restore peace and security in Libya and will benefit stability in the entire region.

Russia will continue working in different formats to promote the success of UN efforts aimed at bringing peace to Libya.

On June 29, Egyptian Prosecutor General Hisham Barakat was killed in a car bomb attack in Cairo.

Moscow vehemently condemns this clearly premeditated crime. We reiterate our utter rejection of terror acts, regardless of the motives that their masterminds and perpetrators are guided by. We want to express our unfailing solidarity with the people of Egypt in its fight against the global terrorism threat, and voice our support for the Egyptian government’s efforts to bring stability to the country.

We express our sincere condolences to the bereaved family.
