On January 29, 2015 H.E. Mr.M.I.Petrakov, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to the Republic of South Africa and the Kingdom of Lesotho, took part in the presentation by Yiftach Ashkenazy: «Liberated but not free: 70 years since the liberation of Auschwitz», organized by Johannesburg Holocaust & Genocide Centre in partnership with the United Nations Information Centre and the Ditsong National Museum of Military History.

Mr.M.I.Petrakov delivered a short message, in which he  specifically stressed that it was the Soviet Army whо liberated Auschwitz  adding  that it was not built on a national principle, but rather presented  was a mixture of 39 nationalities. He also emphasized the fact that over half a million Jews were fighting in the Red Army against fascism and of who over 200 000 perished.

The Ambassador underlined the importance of keeping the truth on the Holocaust and Auschwitz forever passing it on from generation to generation due to its particular importance for  education of  young people.
