Russia’s Knowledge Day, which also traditionally marks the start of a new academic year, was celebrated at the Russian Embassy’s School in Pretoria on 1 September 2015. This year’s event had a special flavour to it — the School got upgraded to a full-scale educational facility with all grades present, from the 1st to the 11th.
The celebrations opened with a rendition of the Russian National Anthem and traditional presentations by the teachers and the students.
The Russian Ambassador to the Republic of South Africa H.E. Mikhail Petrakov congratulated the students, their parents and the teachers on the beginning of a new academic year. The Ambassador wished the children to achieve success in their pursuit for knowledge.
Afterwards senior pupils masterfully waltzed to the music of the famous Soviet-Russian composer Georgy Sviridov.
Then the first graders eloquently recited some school-related verses.
According to a Russian tradition a bell ring often referred to as the «First Bell» marks the start of a new academic year. In a symbolic gesture of passing the baton of knowledge, students from both the 11th and the 1st grades rang the bell together.
